DraftKings has announced plans to launch its online sportsbook in Washington DC, marking its entry into the market following a market access agreement with DC United. Pending regulatory approvals, DraftKings will become the 29th jurisdiction in North America where their sportsbook operates. This move comes after BetMGM and Caesars went live in DC last week, thanks to the DC Council’s decision to open the mobile sports betting market to multiple operators.
Matt Kalish, President of DraftKings North America, expressed excitement at expanding the company’s presence in more than half the country and thanked the DC Council for creating the opportunity to bring DraftKings’ sportsbook to the nation’s capital. DC United’s President of Business Operations, Danita Johnson, also welcomed the partnership with DraftKings and emphasized their commitment to providing seamless fan experiences with the new online sportsbook.
This development in DC marks the end of FanDuel’s exclusivity as the sole operator in partnership with the DC Lottery. BetMGM and Caesars previously operated within exclusion zones around physical venues, with BetMGM at Nationals Park and Caesars at Capital One Arena, the first sportsbook in a US professional sports venue.
With Washington DC’s sports betting handle reaching a record $35.4m in May, the entrance of DraftKings into the market is sure to further stir up competition and excitement among sports bettors in the area.
