Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York made history in 2022 by becoming the first Black lawmaker to be elected leader of a major party in Congress, replacing former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. At 53 years old, Jeffries has been serving as a representative in the House since 2013, representing New York’s 8th Congressional District in Brooklyn. Known for his dedication to working in the best interests of everyday Americans, Jeffries recently expressed concerns to President Joe Biden that his continued candidacy could potentially cost Democrats control in Congress.
