Former Major League Baseball player Jerry Walker has passed away at the age of 85. Walker, who at 20 became the youngest player to start the All-Star Game in 1959, died following an apparent heart attack at his home in Ada, Oklahoma. He played eight seasons in the MLB for the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Athletics, and Cleveland. After his playing career, Walker managed in the New York Yankees’ minor league system, worked as a scout for them, and served as a pitching coach for the Yankees and Houston Astros. He also had stints as a general manager for the Detroit Tigers and worked in the front offices of the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. Walker’s record as the youngest player to start an All-Star Game was broken by Tigers outfielder Al Kaline in 1955, and he remains the second-youngest player to start in the All-Star Game. Walker’s legacy in baseball will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike, as he made significant contributions both on and off the field during his career.
