Maryland Advocates for ‘Fair Competition’ to Retain Team

The Washington Commanders are undergoing significant changes under new ownership led by managing partner Josh Harris. One of the final adjustments Harris is focused on is finding a new home for the team in the near future. The potential locations for the new home include Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, all part of the DMV area.

Maryland officials, including Sen. Ben Cardin, are advocating for the Commanders to remain in Landover, where they have been for over 20 years. They emphasize the importance of binding agreements regarding the future of the current stadium property if the team decides to move. However, Maryland faces competition from Virginia, which is also eyeing to house the Commanders.

The decision on the new stadium’s location hinges on the passing of the RFK Bill, which would grant long-term control of the old RFK Stadium land to D.C. If the team does move back to D.C., it could potentially leave Maryland out of the running to host the Commanders. Despite this, Maryland is determined to ensure it is not left with unused land if the team relocates.

The Commanders have invested approximately $75 million in improvements to FedEx Field in the past year and remain committed to their partnerships in Prince George’s County. While the team currently plays in Landover, future developments could see them moving to a different location.
