Hamas paves the path for a potential cease-fire

Hamas has given preliminary approval of a U.S.-backed proposal for a phased cease-fire deal in Gaza, marking a potential breakthrough in the nine-month conflict. The deal would start with a six-week cease-fire, during which hostages would be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Following this, negotiations would continue for a permanent cease-fire, while Israel would withdraw forces from Gaza and allow displaced people to return home. Hamas is seeking written guarantees for continued negotiations beyond the initial phase.

The proposal comes after an Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza, killing at least 16 people, including children. The conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread devastation in Gaza, with a humanitarian crisis leaving hundreds of thousands on the brink of famine.

Both sides are cautiously optimistic about the potential deal, with families of hostages expressing hope but also concern over past failed negotiations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that the war will not end until the goals of destroying Hamas’ military capabilities and returning all hostages are achieved. Hamas, on the other hand, fears that Israel might restart the war after hostages are released.

The cease-fire deal also includes provisions for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, with around 600 trucks daily, and assistance for the hard-hit northern enclave. Despite some setbacks, the phased approach of the proposed deal offers a glimmer of hope for an end to the prolonged conflict in Gaza.
