Contreras crushes game-tying homer, Cardinals stage epic comeback to defeat Nationals 7-6

The St. Louis Cardinals had a thrilling comeback victory against the Washington Nationals, overcoming an early 5-0 deficit to win 7-6 in 11 innings. Willson Contreras hit a game-tying homer in the ninth inning, and Masyn Winn scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the 11th. The Nationals had taken the lead in the 10th thanks to a run-scoring single by Keibert Ruiz, but the Cardinals fought back. Juan Yepez lined into a double play to end the 10th inning, and the Cardinals never gave up hope. Luis Garcia Jr. had a strong performance for Washington, hitting his third home run in two games. Meanwhile, Nolan Arenado and Nolan Gorman shined for St. Louis, with Gorman hitting an RBI single in the 10th inning.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol praised the team’s consistency and resilience, highlighting their ability to stay in the game no matter the score. Winning pitcher Ryan Helsley also spoke about the team’s determination, noting that their bullpen was taxed but they kept fighting. Despite a strong performance, Washington manager Dave Martinez acknowledged that the team made mistakes and fell short in the end.

The Cardinals are looking forward to utilityman Tommy Edman potentially starting a minor league rehab assignment, while the Nationals recalled Juan Yepez from Triple-A Rochester. The next matchup will feature Cardinals’ Lance Lynn against Nationals’ MacKenzie Gore. Lynn has a history with the Nationals, having given up a walk-off homer to Jayson Werth in the 2012 National League Division Series.
