Ranger injured and suspect killed in shooting at Yellowstone Park

A park ranger was injured and a suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The incident occurred overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, when rangers responded to reports of a person with a gun making threats in the Canyon Village area. The rangers exchanged gunfire with the individual, resulting in the suspect’s death and the injury of one park ranger who is in stable condition. There is no ongoing threat to the public, and the area around Canyon Lodge complex has been closed for investigation by the NPS and the FBI. Fatal attacks are rare in national parks, with only 43 homicides recorded by the NPS between 2007 and May 21, 2024. Further details about the incident were not immediately available.
