Abigail Disney, an heiress to the Disney family fortune, has announced her decision to withhold donations to Democrats unless Joe Biden drops out of the presidential race. Disney believes that Biden’s inability to perform during the debate against former President Donald Trump last week puts the party at risk of losing the election. She expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris as a strong alternative candidate.
Gideon Stein, the president of the Moriah Fund, has also decided to pause planned donations of $3.5 million until a new candidate is selected, following Disney’s lead. Karla Jurvetson, a top Democratic donor, reportedly agrees with the sentiment and is considering pausing her donations as well.
Despite pressure from wealthy donors like Disney, Biden has stated that he has no intentions of withdrawing from the race. Biden’s lackluster debate performance has caused concern among Democratic Party donors, with some suggesting that he is unable to take on Trump. A recent poll conducted by The New York Times/Sienna College shows Biden trailing Trump by 6 percentage points among likely voters.
Representatives for the Biden campaign have not responded to requests for comment. The Democratic Party is facing an internal crisis as influential donors like Disney and Stein put their financial support on hold, urging the party to consider other candidates to improve their chances in the upcoming election.
