Since 1801, the White House has hosted Independence Day celebrations on its South Lawn, with activities evolving over two centuries. James K. Polk introduced fireworks to the event in 1845, changing the celebrations from the horse races and cock fights Thomas Jefferson held during his presidency. Recent presidents have each put their own spin on July 4th celebrations at the White House. George W. Bush continued long-held traditions with cookouts and fireworks displays, as well as attending a naturalization ceremony in 2008. Barack Obama’s celebrations featured star-studded concerts honoring military families and veterans, with a performance by Bruno Mars in 2015. Donald Trump held a “Salute to America” featuring parades and flyovers near the National Mall along with a televised speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Upon taking office, Joe Biden continued traditions by hosting various military bands at the White House celebration. Each president has added their own unique touches to the annual festivities.
