Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán has come under fire from European officials for his unscheduled visit to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just days into Hungary’s presidency of the European Council. This visit has overshadowed Hungary’s planned priorities for the next six months, including a tougher stance on migration policies and support for the European defence strategy.
Orbán’s visit to Moscow has raised concerns about Hungary’s commitment to the European Union, with President of the European Council Charles Michel reminding him that he has “no mandate” to negotiate on behalf of the EU. Polish President Donald Tusk and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo have also criticized the visit, calling it “disturbing” and highlighting its impact on EU interests.
Despite the backlash, Hungarian officials maintain that their policy towards Ukraine is one of neutrality and support for negotiation. They emphasize that there is “no military solution” to the conflict and that both parties need to come to the table to resolve the matter. While expressing concern for Ukraine and condemning Russian aggression, Hungary remains firm in its decision not to provide lethal military equipment to Kyiv, citing their responsibility to protect the sovereignty of their own country.
As tensions continue to mount in Ukraine, Hungary’s stance on the conflict and Orbán’s actions in meeting with Putin have sparked controversy within the EU. The government’s insistence on dialogue and refusal to engage militarily reflect their commitment to maintaining peace and security within the region.
