End of Identity and Democracy signaled by European Parliament’s Conservatives and Patriots

The Identity and Democracy Group in the European Parliament is facing challenges as its members are being absorbed by other political groups, such as the European Conservatives and Reformists and the new Patriots for Europe. With the Conservatives and Reformists seeing significant growth and becoming the third largest group in the Euro Chamber, they are aiming to heavily influence European policies in the next legislature. The Patriots for Europe, an alliance of nationalist parties founded by Viktor Orbán, is also seeking new members to form a political group.

The potential departure of Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen’s MEPs from the Identity and Democracy Group could signal its dissolution, as the group lacks the minimum numbers required to form a group. Analysts believe that these parties may compromise and join either Orbán’s new party or the European Conservatives and Reformists. The League, for internal political reasons, may have to align with Orbán’s patriots.

Marine Le Pen’s political trajectory may lead her closer to the European Conservatives and Reformists group in order to appear more moderate ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The day of truth for the radical right in the European Parliament will be on July 8, when both Patriots for Europe and Identity and Democracy have scheduled their constitutive meeting. The shifts and alliances within these political groups could have a significant impact on European politics in the upcoming legislature.
