Right-wing Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage joined in on the #DogsAtPollingStations trend by posing with a pup outside a voting station, despite having already voted by post. Other animals, such as horses, tortoises, and cats, were also seen outside polling stations on election day, with their owners eager to involve them in the democratic process. The hashtag #dogsatpollingstations began trending on social media, with thousands of posts showcasing pets outside polling stations.
While the weather in London was clear and sunny for voters, the potential outcome of the election remains unclear. If Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer wins, he would become the first MP with the title “Sir” to be elected as Prime Minister since the 1950s. Starmer received his knighthood in 2014 for his work as a human rights lawyer and head of the government prosecutor’s office.
The election results could lead to various scenarios, such as a hung parliament, coalition government, confidence and supply agreement, or a minority government. If Labour wins, it would be a rarity, as the party has not won a general election since Tony Blair stepped down in 2007.
The votes of Hong Kong immigrants, who moved to Britain after Beijing’s crackdown on dissent in the Chinese territory, could also play a crucial role in the election, especially in determining the fate of Conservative candidates in certain seats. More than 120,000 Hong Kongers have moved to Britain under a special immigration scheme introduced in response to the national security law imposed by Beijing. Their participation in the election signifies a meaningful opportunity to engage in democratic elections again.
